Frequently Asked Questions
How Therapeutic Fly-Fishing
Works
What is Therapeutic Fly-Fishing?
Therapeutic Fly-Fishing combines the calming, rhythmic act of fly-fishing with evidence-based trauma therapy. In these outdoor sessions, a licensed therapist—trained in EMDR—guides you through a process that engages both your body and mind. The movement of casting and the stillness of the water create space for emotional healing, helping you process difficult experiences in a natural, grounding environment.
How does it actually help with trauma or anxiety?
Fly-fishing naturally engages the brain in bilateral stimulation—meaning both sides of your brain are gently activated through rhythmic, left-right movement. This mirrors the core mechanism of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a powerful therapy used to help people recover from trauma, anxiety, and stress. When done intentionally, the act of casting becomes a tool to release what’s been held in and reprocess painful memories in a safe, supported way.
Do I need to know how to fly-fish?
Not at all. No experience is required. We use a simplified method called tenkara—a minimalist form of fly-fishing that’s easy to learn and accessible to anyone. Your therapist will teach you what you need to know and walk with you every step (or cast) of the way.
Is this just for people with trauma?
While Therapeutic Fly-Fishing is especially helpful for those processing trauma, it’s also beneficial for anyone feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally stuck, or simply seeking a new way to connect with themselves. If you love nature but find traditional therapy settings too rigid or intense, this could be a great fit.
What should I bring to a session?
Wear weather-appropriate clothing and shoes that can get wet or muddy. We provide all fishing gear and will let you know ahead of time if there’s anything specific you need to prepare. We also suggest bringing water, sunscreen, and a sense of openness.
What happens if the weather’s bad?
If conditions aren’t safe or comfortable, we’ll reschedule or switch to a traditional indoor or telehealth session—your comfort and safety always come first.

Is this covered by insurance?
Yes—sessions are billed like any other therapy session. If you're using insurance or submitting a superbill, this usually qualifies. We’re happy to help you navigate the details if you have questions.
